Why was the forum down?

I wanted to add a new feature to the forum, called "Why was the forum down?" since I know some of you are a curious sort. So here it is.

The forum was down because some rude-ass motherfucker was trying to hack into the site by brute-forcing password guesses on the Wordpress side of the server.

At about 5:15pm today, the bastard finally realized that I shut down that way in, (even though it wasn't doing him any good anymore, he kept on trying) or maybe his little script just stopped running. Either way, hopefully we won't be seeing him anymore.

His "trick" was generating so much bad traffic that it was crashing the code on the server that serves up all the web content. It would have probably been easier to just get rid of Wordpress, since it's a known bug in their code that they have chosen not to fix for some reason, but I think it is important to have a non-forum presence for the site, even if nobody uses it. (Even me.)

Regardless, even his bad traffic shouldn't have been enough to kill the web service, so that is something that I will have to look into in the very near future. But at least we're safe from that little exploit for now. :beerchug:

The forum was down today for a few minutes around 10:30am due to unknown issues with our service provider.

So, the forum was down this last time because of some unknown issue with the ISP that hosts the server. As of Sunday, they informed me that the entire subnet that the server lives on was down. (They did offer to give me a new IP address that was not on that subnet, but that would have meant a lot of rec-onfiguring of the server on my part, and possible mistakes because I don't do this very often, so I felt it was safer to just wait it out.)

I still don't have a concrete reason from my ISP why the subnet was down, or why it was down for so long. (4 days of downtime is actually quite unacceptable in the internet world.)

The Forum was down for a couple hours today because the domain name server was having issues with their nameservers. (Never use GoDaddy.)

The forum was down briefly today because I noticed there was a lot of traffic coming from a search engine bot that I cared nothing about. So I modified the file that tells those bots what parts of this server they can search (I told it none) and then I rebooted the server for that change to take effect, since it appeared that just restarting the web service didn't do the trick.

Also, there was a vulnerability in an older version of Wordpress that allowed some Chinese asshole to put a bunch of random links on the front page of the website. Probably porn or malware or worse. So I deleted that. The file was last updated yesterday, but I haven't checked the front page for weeks, so who knows how long that was up there. Thanks Wordpress for writing such crappy code.
