Boycott 3D
That is, when applicable.
The next time you head to the cinema, make sure the film you're seeing was actually shot for 3D. Studios are processing films (like Clash of the Titans) for 3D after the fact, whether it serves the film or not. I've also read that Paramount has been warning theatres that if they don't make room for 3D versions, they won't provide 2D prints. The point of this, of course, is to jack up your ticket price by $3-$5.
Don't fall prey to this. If the movie was shot for 2D, see it in 2D. If your cinema doesn't offer a 2D option, complain to the manager, write a letter to the studio, etc. Shelling out $5 for plastic glasses does not support cinema, it only hastens its demise.
I really hope home video 3D suffocates this fad. I'm already sick of it.

Amazing coincidence. I was just talking to my neighbor who was walking his dog and he asked me if I was going to see Clash of the Titans tomorrow. I said probably not and he responded with: But it's in 3-D.
I just educated him based on this post.
See that? This thread is already making a difference!

Iggy. That's cool and all. But it don't mean shit unless you use your 3D knowledge on the ladies.

Yea... Iggy
But yea, I just read a review on Clash Of The Titans and this reviewer made it quite clear, the 3D was minimal, in the sense whatever technology they used to convert the 2D to 3D didn't do much.
So I definitely will be checking out the 2D version, especially if the theater is tacking on added expense.

That right here is what'll kill this fad off quicker than anything else. People will be lining up to see 3D movies expecting the kind of immersion that Avatar provided, only to come away disappointed. And next time they'll avoid paying the higher price and will stick with 2D.
At least that what I tell myself when I'm trying to fall asleep.

As we've discussed in other threads, very few films have been really filmed (or rendered in the case of animation) in 3d. Avatar was probably the first live action mainstream one in ages (not couting anaglyph). And among the animated films, all of Disney's 3d films before the Toy Story re-releases were converted 2d. All of Dreamworks animated 3d releases until Monsters Vs. Aliens were converted 2d. All of the 3d Zemeckis films were 2d converts. It's just a lot cheaper to do that than to render the second camera. Thankfully now that 3d is taking off that trend in animation seems to be changing. Unfortunately it's getting worse with live aciton thanks to Avatar and studios desperate for 3d films.
Personally I'm not a big 3d fan, though I already ranted about that here so I won't again.

Clash of the Titans may be the best example yet of 3D's failings or, more accurately, the mishandling of the technology. Again, the film was not shot in 3D, it was processed after the fact. However, having just returned from a 2D print of the film, it became clear that Warner "advised" director Louis Leterrier to jut objects at the audience a few times each reel, just in case. Basically, the studio wants us to pay extra for our tickets, but they don't want to offer the actual experience we're paying for.
Vote with your wallet.
Note: I do not endorse paying for this movie in any format.

The 3D fad is wearing thin for me. More and more movies are being announced that they will be in 3D. 3D should be something special, not forced down your throat for every movie. Do we really need to see a new Resident Evil movie in 3D? No. Tron 2 in 3D? sounds cool. And the studios forcing filmmakers to convert their films into 3D is a dick move. They are gonna find cheaper ways of converting 2D just so they can bump the ticket prices even more. Fuck that.
If I see Clash of the Titans, I'm gonna try to convince my friends to see it in 2D. It will take some convincing, but I'll try. I'm told the 3D just makes it look like a pop-up book.
Edit: Even the new Jackass movie is in 3D. That is horrifying. Awesome, but horrifying.

I don't mind the 3D, if it's done right like Avatar, so yeah I paid extra to see it. Decent glasses and technology held up with the colors.
Well, I shot my wad. Been there done that. Homey don't play that game of paying more. I feel like I'm being screwed as it is with current ticket prices. To pay more for 3D... are you kidding me.
Cripes we have a cineplex here where apparently one of the screens is extra large and they tack on an extra 3 bucks. Fuck that.

After my 2 recent 3d "experiences" I'll have no problem avoiding 3d movies in the theaters.

In some ways, I agree that 3D is overrated and shouldn't be the future of movie making. However, in some ways, I appreciate 2D films that are converted to 3D, because in that regard, the movie doesn't have the gimmicky 3D stuff that happens when movies are made for 3D. "Ooooh, I am throwing this spear at you," or "Look at me filmed from below playing with the yo-yo as it goes at the audience" type stuff. I haven't seen Avatar in 3D, but I did see Clash of the Titans on Saturday in 3D. I wasn't disappointed with the experience, and I can say that though I don't like studios forcing the issue, I am not against movies shot in 2D being released in 3D.

Hmmm I'd love to put that on my facebook page except can you do one without any Steelers paraphernalia? Other than that is definately good for public consumption.
Guess I should have read the article first. I see now the video is a necessary companion piece. The hat can stay.
Its a very well written piece Pirate. Bravo for that. I did put the link on my Facebook page and encourage other to do so, ummm on your facebook pages not mine. That is if you want people to be informed.

For the record, the article is brilliant and kudos to Pirate for writing it. It's an amazing read, well thought out and says a lot. The video was only for you non-reading bastiches.

Health and safety are more reasons to beware the 3rd dimension.
And this warning comes from Samsung.

At first I was wondering how this affects pregnant women.... now I know
I'm predicting in some future other world state, 3D glasses will become a fashion statement.

If you're having to wear these stupid glasses when you're cuddled up with your woman watching a film, the odds you'll have to worry about anything related to her being pregnant are silm to none. Nothing to ruin an intimate mood like a ugly piece of headgear in the way.

Just as it did in the 50's, the novelty is starting to wear off. Avatar was a must see event film for the 3d. But now that as it becomes common place, people are going back to wating to see films for the stories they tell. I'm not saying 3d will die out, but studios are going to get a rude awakening when 3d doesn't become the cash cow they thought it would be. Once 3d tv's in the home become more common place, that will eat into theatrical 3d revenes even more. Studios always have a short sighted pack mentality as it is. This one is going to bite theater owners in the ass who've been sold on the hype and spent tons of money converting theaters.

That would be my theater. Get 2 more screens tomorrow (sorry Taxi i don't know if i can grab you some screen as they are doing it while we are closed) So we have 3 3D screens now and they plan to convert my other 9 35mm projectors to Digital supposably in a years time (so i need a new job to look for ) How many more will be converted to 3D is another story, but i think people aren't seeing 3D because of prices. We charge an extra $3 per ticket and adds up fast. The other thing that might be keeping some of the big sequels form bigger 3D earnings is that people started off 2D for the series and i will like to see it end that way as well. This year has been much slower even at work since Avatar left, but who knows what might happen in a few weeks for those who get Avatar back for the extended cut.

The last 3D movie I went and saw was Avatar. There have others before and since Avatar but none that make me want to pay extra to go see it. I'm not sure what the extra charge is 2 or 3 bucks but it's enough to make me think twice. I've got a few friends that go to almost everything that comes out at the movie 2d and 3d but none of them have said "you have to see this3d movie". I'm not sold on it for the home or theater.

The last one I saw was Toy Story 3 in 3D. The wife and I want to see it again (ok, more her than me, but I like going to the movies with her). But, we don't want to pay 3 bucks more per person to see it.
